Bray Summerfest 2012, Ireland’s largest free Summer Festival is kick starting its programme of events this week with the North Wicklow Times ‘Design a Postcard competition’ for all 2^nd-6^th Class pupils across local primary schools.

‘Summer in Bray – What it means to you’ is the theme of the competition that will be run through each of the local primary schools with closing dates for entry on Friday 25^th May, and the winner being announced at the Bray Summerfest Launch on Thursday 31^st May.

Launching the competition, Festival Director, Mick Glynn commented, “Children have always played an integral role in Bray Summerfest getting involved in events such as puppet displays, story-telling, Disco Bambino and even helping out on the Glenroe Tour Farm”.

“We want to continue this involvement by giving pupils the opportunity to design a postcard depicting what summer in Bray means to them. The winner will receive fantastic prizes including;

1. €250 towards the school library fund
2. A Bray Summerfest Funpack including tickets to events throughout the festival in July and August, Summerfest t-shirt and much more

Bray Chamber President, Ian Donnelly, one of the competition judges commented, “On top of this we are very excited that the postcard will be printed and made available throughout Bray as well as in over 250 Pictureworks postcard stands throughout Ireland. This gives pupils a great chance to display their artwork and raise awareness of our great festival.”

“The community of Bray has always been at the heart of Summerfest and having families and children involved are really important to what we do. The Summerfest has continued to grow with over 120,000 visitors last year and whilst catering for tourists we also firmly believe in involving the community in all aspects of the festival through art, drama, music or food” said Festival Director Mick Glynn.

“As part of our community approach we’ll also be hosting a competition for local residents throughout Bray to win a ‘mini festival’ for their area where we will provide music, food and a good occasion for all to come together and have a good day”.

“Bray Summerfest brings an economic benefit to the town of €8m each year and providing local initiatives for the people will remain at the heart of what Bray Summerfest is about – fun, family and community”, concluded Mick Glynn.

Bray Summerfest was founded in 1981 and continues to be Ireland’s largest free summer festival. In 2011, over 120,000 visitors came to Bray, with 80,000 in attendance on the day of the Air Spectacular. The festival is recognised as a main tourist driver in North Wicklow and brings some €8m in economic benefit to the area whilst maintaining its community focus and providing the best in entertainment value.
